Athletic Hall of Fame

Waynflete’s Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2022 to recognize those athletes, coaches, administrators, supporters, and teams who excelled in their respective sports or coaching/support roles and who brought honor to the school.

The school is pleased to announce the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The Hall of Fame selection committee has chosen four individuals to receive this special honor: Amanda Waterhouse Isgro ’98, Matt Marston ’97, Christine Ordway Opperman ’09, and Brandon Salway.

2024 Inductees:

Amanda Waterhouse Isgro ’98

Amanda Waterhouse Isgro ’98 had an impressive career as a Flyer. As a soccer player, she led the Flyers to state championships in 1995, 1996, and 1997. She was also named to the Class Regional All-Star Team by the Maine Soccer Coaches Association those three years. In 1997, she was named to the All-Regional Team and the Western Maine State Team, chosen as the Maine Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year, and was Maine Sunday Telegram’s Fall Sports MVP Player. On the lacrosse field, Amanda led her teams to state championships in 1997 and 1998 and was the leading scorer in her junior year. Amanda attended Bates College, where she played soccer all four years. Today, Amanda continues her passion for soccer as a varsity soccer coach for Temple Academy and president of the Waterville Youth Soccer Association.

Matt Marston ’97

Matt Marston ’97 was a standout cross-country runner and lacrosse player for Waynflete. In 1995, he became the first male Flyer to win an individual cross-country state championship. He also led the team to its first state title. Matt served as co-captain of the 1997 boys lacrosse team, which won Waynflete’s first boys lacrosse state title, and was named to the all-state team for lacrosse defense. He was a co-founder of the school’s Nordic ski team. Matt was chosen as Waynflete’s male athlete of the year in 1997 and competed in cross-country and lacrosse at St. Michael’s College. He is the owner of Basics Fitness and continues to support Waynflete as a parent of two student-athletes.

Christine Ordway Opperman ’09

Christine Ordway Opperman ’09 was a standout tennis player for the Flyers. She was a three-year team captain and state player of the year three times. She also won the state singles title in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Christine won a team title in 2006 and went on to win the New England Tennis singles title that same year. She attended Division 1 Cornell University, playing #1 and #2 singles and serving as team captain for two years. Christine continues to share her love for tennis as a middle school tennis coach at Alexandria Country Day School, where she is a learning specialist.

Brandon Salway

Brandon Salway served the athletics and physical education programs at Waynflete for 34 years. He guided the boys soccer program to eight state championships and also led the 2013 girls basketball team to a state championship. Brandon was a beloved PE teacher who taught sports skills and movement over three decades while developing sportsmanship and a love of the game. As the assistant director of athletics, he supported all aspects of the program and mentored many young coaches. Brandon entered the Waynflete Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023 as coach of the 1993 boys soccer team. He will be honored individually in 2024 for his long record of outstanding service and success.

Class of 2023

1993 Boys Varsity Soccer Team

The 1993 boys varsity soccer team is the first team inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The team was undefeated in the regular season (12–0) and went on to win Waynflete’s first ever MPA Class D soccer state championship. The team comprised coaches Brandon Salway and Ted Shipley, and players Justin Amoroso ’94, Greg Bokinsky ’96, Luke Brannigan ’95, Matt Famolare ’95, Ed Flowerdew ’94, Nate Gray ’97, Justin Huston ’94, Saer Huston ’97, Gabe Johnson ’95, David Joyce ’96, Brian Langis ’97, Joel Mahoney ’95, Shafaat Qazi ’95, Clay Rockefeller ’97, Tom Sanborn ’96, Matt Shardlow ’95, Leigh Smith ’96, Colin Sullivan-Stevens ’95, Ben Twitchell ’95, Tim Wannemacher ’95, David Whelan ’96, and Aaron Willis ’95.

Drew Dubuque

Drew served as both faculty member and athletic director during his time at Waynflete. He led the girls varsity soccer team to five regional championships and four state Class D championships and was named United Soccer Coaches 2002 New England Coach of the Year. Under Drew’s leadership, the girls soccer program had a 50–1 winning streak from 1995–98. Drew coached approximately 100 middle and upper school basketball, soccer, and lacrosse teams over the course of his 34-year coaching career, including more than 1,000 players. As varsity soccer coach, he amassed 151 wins over 13 seasons. Drew invites former players and their families to reach out to him here.

Ed Flowerdew ’94

Ed Flowerdew was captain of the state championship-winning soccer team in his senior year and was selected for the all-state soccer team. He was captain of the 1994 regional championship-winning baseball team and was selected for all-state baseball in 1993 and 1994. He served as captain of the ski team and was an MPA state runner-up for golf. Ed went on to have an impressive Division 1 golf career at the University of Maryland.

Lisa Lightbody ’98

Lisa Lightbody played varsity soccer, basketball, and lacrosse for all four years in Upper School. She was a member of Waynflete’s first-ever girls state soccer championship-winning team in 1995, which won additional championships in 1996 and 1997 (she served as team captain in 1997). She was captain of the 1998 basketball team, was selected for all-conference in the same year, and was the first Waynflete girl to score more than 1,000 points. Lisa was a member of the 1997 and 1998 championship-winning lacrosse team and was team captain in 1998. She was Maine Sunday Telegram’s Lacrosse Player of the Year in 1998. In her senior year, Lisa won Waynflete’s Sportsmanship and Most Valuable Player Awards.

Ron Hall

Ron Hall, former head of school, Upper School director, development director, admissions director, and athletic director, has been a dedicated administrator, coach, mentor, and fan. Over his many years at Waynflete, Ron was not only responsible for developing many sports programs at the school, he also coached numerous Upper School teams, including soccer, basketball, hockey, skiing, tennis, and lacrosse. The Fore River Campus’s lower field was named Hall Field to honor Ron for his significant contributions to Waynflete Athletics.

Jeff Madore

Jeff Madore began coaching girls varsity tennis in 2002, leading the team to class C state championships in 2002 and 2006. Since he began coaching boys varsity tennis in 2007, Jeff has led Waynflete to 15 class C state championships, including 13 consecutive championships (2008–2021). Jeff has been recognized by the Portland Press Herald numerous times as Coach of the Year, and was the Maine State and New England Tennis Coach of the Year in 2019.

Martha Veroneau ’13

Martha Veroneau, Class of 2013, was a class C individual cross-country champion in 2009 and a state champion basketball player who was selected as Miss Maine Basketball in 2013. She was a 1,000-point scorer, Waynflete’s all-time leading scorer, and holds the state tournament record for points scored in a game (47). Martha was a three-time lacrosse state champion, was the Portland Press Herald’s Athlete of the Year in 2013, and was the Press Herald’s Lacrosse Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

Morgan Woodhouse ’10

Morgan Woodhouse, Class of 2010, was an All New England soccer player, a two-time state champion, and was twice selected as the class C soccer player of the year. She was a Miss Maine Basketball semi-finalist, a 1,000-point scorer, and a Western Maine Conference Butler award winner. Morgan was named an All American in lacrosse, was twice a state champion, and was Waynflete’s senior athlete of the year.
